Dean and Castiel: a Profound Bond

DEAN AND CASTIEL (An ongoing blog about their relationship)

CW/Supernatural screen capture: Dean Winchester and Castiel

The relationship is intense. The bond is profound. The relationship between Dean Winchester and the angel Castiel is one of the strongest on Supernatural. Whether intended or unintended, the bond between the human and the angel sometimes surpasses the brotherly bond between Dean and Sam. Sometimes. Supernatural will always be the story of the adventures of the Brothers Winchester, but a captivating relationship between a man whose destiny would break the first seal and the angel who saved him from perdition intruded upon the seamless story which ebbed from Sam Winchester to Dean Winchester back to Sam Winchester.

What is it that created such a spark? I can only speculate. In my opinion, I think Dean's character needed another character who understood his ordeal in hell. When Dean was resurrected from hell he was secretive and quiet, he refused to speak of it at first. Enter Castiel who possibly saw Dean at his worst and most violent. It wasn't in the script so much, but Castiel would look at Dean as if truly looking at Dean's soul. Dean would then respond as someone being scrutinized to his core.

Dean's character also needs to bestow his big brother jokes and comments upon another character. While younger brother Sam was plunging into his destiny to break the last seal in the fourth season, Castiel was entering his journey into the understanding of humans. Dean's character was thrust into being Castiel's teacher of human emotions. As if Dean would be the best teacher...especially with women...At the same time, Dean would be an interesting teacher of survival, family loyalty, and sacrifice. All of a sudden Dean was a fountain of new quips and commentary...from an angel's point of view.  Castiel became Dean's foil. That job used to belong to Sam. Castiel slipped in to become Dean's new mirror in Dean Winchester's post hell story.

Fans know there's more. It's Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins. Ackles and Collins work together beautifully. It's melody and harmony. It's well composed counterpoint. Whether Dean and Cass are arguing or sharing a quiet moment, the chemistry is like thunder and lightning. When their characters stop talking, Ackles and Collins continue to act and together they generate so much emotion and unspoken dialog.

Perhaps it comes down to acting style. Both Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins seem like they analyze a script in a similar manner. They both seem to find the nuances in the writing to create more substance than what is in the script. It's more than bringing the script to life, it's creating more than what is given to them.

Dean and Castiel show the intensity between each other when not looking directly at each other, as seen here in a screen capture from  Frontierland.

CW/Supernatural: Dean and Castiel

I'd like to address the fandom of Dean+Castiel for a moment. Dean and Castiel isn't a dream that fans have carved and created from a non existent realm. I'm going to attempt to write this portion of the blog in terms of Castiel...

Maybe it's just me, but I've always seen Dean and Castiel as a duo that transcended the norms of relationships. Castiel is an angel, Dean is human. They don't always understand each other and don't always agree, but they both care deeply about the other.

It's the misunderstandings that I love the most. When Dean chose to drive the two young boys to a safe place in Mommy Dearest, I understood. Dean was making a human decision based on sympathy and apathy, human emotions. Dean disobeyed Castiel's warnings, but the lure of innocence, of the young boys without parents weighed heavily upon Dean.

Castiel on the other hand is a being that is beyond the physical. In Dean's eyes, Castiel saved him from hell. Castiel was able to move beyond the vessel and do wondrous things. Castiel is a divine creature. Castiel doesn't always understand Dean, although in Mommy Dearest, I think Cas understood completely. He simply couldn't alter Dean's focus.

I think some in the fandom believe that Castiel is being used by these humans.

But Castiel chose to be friends with Dean because he likes Dean.

I think Dean leaned on Cas, but when does Dean lean on anyone? Castiel allowed it, Dean did it. Castiel could have said NO Dean, I DON'T WANT to be your friend. I think Dean doesn't quite understand what Castiel did to be "friends" with the Winchesters, but Dean can't. Dean has a flawed human thought process and a warped one at that being raised by John.

This friendship is a mutual agreement, but it doesn't mean the friendship is always equal.

I think of Superman and Lois Lane at times. Laugh if you must. Superman likes Lois, flaws and all. Superman LOVES Lois, flaws and all. I think it's the same with Cas and Dean. They are from different species and they like each other even though they don't understand each other all time. With all respect bestowed, I'm going to bring up Spock and Kirk. Spock is the more sophisticated being who enjoys the company of James Kirk. Spock is the superior being, but somehow understands that James Kirk is a worthy human capable of great things. Spock is physically more powerful than Kirk and Vulcans "seem" to be more superior than humans and yet a friendship was forged between Vulcan and Human. Yes, I know Spock is part human, but he still finds his completely and wholly human friend fascinating.

Castiel does have more power. Castiel is stronger than Dean. Castiel is the superior creature because he's an angel. Some believe that Castiel does too much for the Brothers Winchester. He probably does! But he's the angel and he seems to enjoy helping his human friends. Castiel also likes taking care of Dean as shown in "Point of No Return", "The End", and "Swan Song".

I'm not sure the fandom has figured that out yet! Castiel enjoys taking care of Dean! Now that we know that Castiel can feel pride, eye wink, there's hubris to Castiel's actions towards Dean and Team Free Will.

This is a situation where there can't be equality.

I might tackle that next....

~more to come on the dynamic relationship between Dean Winchester and the Angel Castiel...
